SPECIAL REPORT: BoDog Forced to Move Domains

August 28, 2007

It’s been a bad day for Bodog as news has spread about why the Sportsbetting giant has been forced to move domains. Once hosted at Bodog.com, you can now find Bodog’s software at NewBodog.com. The website is essentially the exact same as it used to be, and so is the software. The only difference we’ve found is that the domain now has the word “new” in it.

This is a terrible tragedy for Bodog, as their busiest sign up period of the year is about to commence, NCAA College Football season and the start of the NFL season. These two sports are the most heavily bet, and the losses suffered will be tremendous.

For those of you wondering just why this event happened, it is due to a copyright dispute over the software that Bodog used to download their software onto client’s computers. This issue has yet to be resolved, and is estimated to take up to a month, unless of course Bodog spits up the $48.5 million settlement that a Nevada judged imposed against the company for not showing up to court. Of course their not going to show up, what Bodog employee in their right mind would step on US soil after the way the US Department of Justice has been acting this past year?

Calvin Ayre, CEO of Bodog, has made a public statement on NewBodog.com.

Welcome to the new (temporary) Bodog. As you may know by now, Bodog.com is experiencing a technical issue impacting our players’ ability to access our website.

This is the result of a legal dispute over the ownership of the Bodog.com domain name. We are fighting this dispute. We are confident that we will win, but until all is settled, I do not want our battle to interrupt your play.

So, I present you with newbodog.com. You won’t notice very many changes: same website, same brand, same product, and same service. Just a new domain name.

We are working to resolve any remaining issues on the temporary site as soon as possible, and fully expect to have our original site back up shortly.

I sincerely apologize if you were affected by our interruption and assure you that I will update you soon.

Regards,

Calvin Ayre

First, it was a patent infringement and not a copyright dispute. Second, they could have hired an attorney (or more likely a huge firm) in the US without being worried about stepping on US soil. Bodog made the choice to ignore the US court because it thought it could get away with it. Now they are suffering the consequences. If it was my company I’d pay up right now because the loss in profits will probably be greater than the default judgment.

Got something to say?
