Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth was born in Madison, Wisconsin on July 16, 1964. Phil won the 1989 World Series of Poker Main Event at the age of 24, becoming the youngest WSOP Main Event Champion ever. To win the event, Phil Hellmuth had to defeat Johnny Chan, who had won the previous two WSOP Main Events. Phil now has a record-tying 10 WSOP bracelets. Only Johnny Chan and the legendary Doyle Brunson have as many. All of Phil’s bracelets have come in Texas Holdem events. However, Phil does have skill in other events, as he did win The World’s Biggest Seven Card Stud Tournament, which took place in Austria. Phil’s peers voted him The world’s best all around poker tournament player in 1996.

Phil Hellmuth is known as Poker Brat, and for good reason. Many people don’t like his arrogant attitude, as he is known for making fun of his opponents’ skill, and has a tendency to erupt when he is given a bad beat. One particularly bad beat helped Phil spawn his now infamous phrase,If luck weren’t involved, I guess I’d win every one. Phil has also had to shave his head because at the 2002 WSOP Main Event he bet Robert Varkonyi that Varkonyi would not win the event. Varkonyi did win the event and Hellmuth had to make good on his wager.

Phil also does a lot of business off of the poker tables. In fact, Phil has said that he could probably make $400 million a year without playing one hand of poker. Phil is the author of four books, Play Poker Like the Pros,” “Bad Beats and Lucky Draws”, “Texas-Hold’em, and The Greatest Poker Hands Ever Played,” and his autobiography, Poker Brat. Phil is featured in several poker videos and video games. He also has his own sunglasses, his own chip set, and his own clothing line, all of which rake in plenty of money. In 2006, Phil Hellmuth also took over as the expert host on Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown.
