Known in the online world as “OMGClayAiken” on Full Tilt Poker, “Jman28” on TwoPlustwo.com, and as “MrSweets28” on Poker Stars, Phil Galfond has slowly built a reputation for himself as one of the best online poker players in the world.

His poker upbringing isn’t unlike most of those born in the boom of online poker, as he gained most of his bankroll and knowledge from grinding Sit & Go tournaments online, while majoring in Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Starting from $10 and $20 Sit & Go’s, and grinding up to some of the highest stakes available, he decided to stop attending college as a junior in 2006. He made the switch to cash games after he was alerted that they could be much more profitable.

Galfond started off with the game of Hold’Em at stakes of $5/$10 Limit, and grew his bankroll enough to play both the $10/$20 and $25/50 Limit games. Admitting himself that in the beginning of his career he had no recognition of bankroll management, Galfond often took shots at games as high as $50/$100 before losing a large percentage of his bankroll and needing to move back down in stakes. Nevertheless, after a few cyclical trials, a little luck and extensive knowledge of the game, Galfond eventually stuck as an online success and began playing the highest stakes available online.

While being an Internet celebrity amongst the poker community was not new to him, the television and media spotlight that many of his peers drew had always managed to avoid Galfond. However, his recognition grew rapidly with a win in the 2008 World Series of Poker $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha w/ re-buys event. He earned just over $800,000 for the win. In 2009 and 2010 respectively, the introduction of his online companies Bluefirepoker and Pokerstatic increased his popularity, and are currently two of Galfond’s ventures into the consumer and promotional aspect of poker. He’s currently the lead instructor and manager for Bluefirepoker.com, and also the creator and founder of PokerStatic.com. Galfond has also been a regular contributor to Bluff Magazine since 2007, in which he displays his adept knowledge of poker with several written articles covering poker theory and game play. In fact, his article entitled “G-Bucks”, is considered by many to be one of the best poker articles ever written.

He’s widely known as an extremely intelligent and creative player, who takes his time to dissect both the possibilities and probabilities of each of his opponents holdings. Considered to be a PLO specialist currently, Galfond’s knowledge and vast experience make him one of the most feared opponents in the game.

He’s made television appearances on both High Stakes Poker and The Big Game.

Phil Galfond is originally from Maryland, but he currently resides in New York City. Galfond frequently plays both No-Limit Hold’Em and Pot-Limit Omaha at stakes of $25/$50 up to $500/$1000.
