“Miami” John Cernuto was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and is one of the major characters on the poker scene today. Playing both online and in tournaments, Cernuto specialises in Omaha Hi/Lo and has been playing professionally for over twenty years thanks to union action at the airport!
Cernuto attended Florida State University and graduated as a finance major, but he never actually used his degree when he finished college. Instead he got a job as an air traffic controller. He thought his job was one for life, but President Ronald Reagan had other ideas. In 1981, Reagan fired over 11,000 striking air traffic controllers on the spot, so Cernuto found himself out of a job and turned to what had been a hobby to make a little cash. That hobby was poker! He travelled to Las Vegas and has never looked back since!
Cernuto’s quirk of preplanning his moves, regardless of what his opponent does in the meantime, has brought him a great degree of success. He won his first major tournament at Caesar’s palace in 1988 and has gone from strength to strength ever since! He only lost one hand in that entire event and this spurred him on to bigger and better things.
It was the following year that Cernuto made his first final table at the World Series of Poker. It was in the $5,000 Seven Card Stud event and he ultimately finished 4th. However, he had to wait a further seven years and numerous cashes before actually winning his first WSOP bracelet. That came in the 1996 $1,500 Seven Card Split and was followed by two more, in 1997 in the $2,000 Hold ‘Em event and in the 2002 $1,500 Limit Omaha event.
In total, Cernuto has made over $4 million from poker tournament wins and cashes. He actually won the 2003 World Heads Up Poker Championship and made his one and only World Poker Tour final table in 2005. It came at the PokerStars Caribbean Poker Adventure event, but the WSOP is most definitely his forte. Cernuto continues to win and cash in various tournaments and is enjoying himself far more than he would as an air traffic controller! President Reagan did him and all of us a favour!
