John Juanda was born in Indonesia on July 8, 1971. He first came to the United States to study at Oklahoma State University and from there continued on to Seattle University to earn his MBA. John Juanda says that he would’ve been a doctor if he hadn’t done so well at poker. John has also spent some time working as a door-to-door bible salesman.
John Juanda started playing in poker tournaments in 1996. John had his first major victory in 2001 when he won the World Poker Open championship. He has won three World Series of Poker bracelets in three different games, Ace to Five Triple Draw Lowball, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo, and Pot Limit Holdem. In 2001 and 2002, John was the runner-up for CardPlayer Magazine’s Tournament Player of the Year award. In 2002, John earned a Tournament Champion of the Year award and he has also won three Best All-Around Player awards.
In 2004 John Juanda won the inaugural Professional Poker Tour event along with making 14 other final tables that year. John placed fifth both the Five-Star World Poker Classic and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship. In 2006 John won AUD $1,000,000 for his victory at the Crown Australian Poker Championship. He also won $500,000 when he placed sixth in the Monte Carlo Millions Main Event, and he followed up that performance by having a second place finish in the FullTiltPoker.Net Invitational in Monte Carlo and a first place finish in the Monte Carlo Millions Consolation Tournament.
