Born in Fresno, California in 1950 Captain Tom Franklin is one of the true veterans of the game. Franklin began playing poker in 1970 and is no less ambitious now than he was then. His goal is still to win three majors within the space of a calendar years and, judging by his determination and dedication thus far, he probably won’t give up until he has achieved that.

A happily married man with five children, Tom Franklin is dedicated to his family, although nothing takes hold of him as poker does. It is the only way of life that he knows. He began by playing in the smaller casinos in California but soon moved up to the bigger casinos. He started playing professionally as soon as he could afford to and has not looked back since. His earnings exceed $2 million to date and he shows no sign of slowing up!

Captain Tom had to wait twenty years for his first finish in the money in the World Series of Poker. That eventually came as he placed 26th in the $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold’Em Championship event. He used that cash as a spur and soon moved on to bigger and better results. He came 7th in the 1995 $10,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em World Championship. However, he didn’t peak until 1999.

During 1999, Franklin placed in two World Series of Poker tournaments. He came 4th in the Las Vegas WSOP $3,000 Limit Hold’Em after winning the $2,500 Omaha Limit two days previously. May must have been a good month because that win gave him his first WSOP bracelet.

Franklin has placed in several tournaments and events since, but none as big as his win in the No Limit Hold’Em event at the Bellagio Five Diamond Classic in 2005. He picked up almost $500,000 for that win and shows no sign of slowing down just yet. He still has the hunger and passion for poker than men half his age lack, so why retire when you’re on a good thing?
