Berry Johnston is one of the true legends of the poker circuit and has been for many years now. Most of the greatest poker players in action at the moment were not even born when Berry Johnston picked up his cards in the first tournaments he played in. Now into his eighties, Berry Johnston is still going strong and enjoying the game that he has been playing for fun since he was a teenager.

Berry Johnston’s list of accomplishments is truly astounding. He began playing poker professionally in 1970 when he found that he had a talent for it. Ice cool at the table, many of his opponents relied on luck rather than their ability to read him. He made a name for himself throughout the 1970s before moving to Las Vegas in the 1980s. He was received with immediate success as he managed to finish third in the 1982 World Series of Poker Main Event. It was only the following year that he won the first of his WSOP bracelets in the $2,500 Match Play event and then placed third again in 1985 after entering the WSOP Main Event.

However, he went one better the following year and won the WSOP Main Event in 1986. He had made a name for himself as the best player in the world at the dawn of the 1990s and has since been recognised as such. Johnston was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2004 and won his fifth WSOP bracelet in 2001.

Johnston has a record to be proud of. As of 2007, he had cashed ten times in the WSOP Main Event, which is more than any other player, has finished in the money fifty two times and has sat in on more than thirty final tables. Anyone with even a remote knowledge of poker will acknowledge that Johnston’s has been an illustrious career that very few players will actually beat.
