Barry Schulman has a lot to answer for in terms of the way poker is played today. He is currently the CEO and publisher of CardPlayer magazine as well as taking his seat at the poker table. However, Schulman had to work his way up from the bottom and everything he has now has been well earned via sheer hard work!
Born in Seattle, Schulman worked his way through the University of Washington to get an accounting degree. At that time he played poker, but as a hobby in his spare time and didn’t think of it in terms of a possible career. It was more a recreational pursuit to pass the time. He opted to go into real estate after he graduated and made enough money to retire in Las Vegas by the early 1990s.
However, Schulman didn’t stay retired for long. He soon found himself bored and looking for a new hobby rather than a career. He picked up poker where he left it and initially started playing with friends whenever he could. Living in Vegas though, he had the perfect opportunity to play for stakes at the many casinos. His hobby then led him to buy CardPlayer, which was just a flyer handed out at the casinos at that point. It has definitely come a long way since 1998 and is now the magazine that poker fans and players alike buy.
CardPlayer has helped the game of poker to evolve to the level it is at now. It has publicised the game in a way that no other publication has and definitely promoted it on a world stage. Schulman has earned millions as a result of the success of the magazine and has taken part in many tournaments himself.
Schulman has an amazing success rate in terms of the ratio of cashes versus tournaments entered. As a result of the constant travelling that comes with being CardPlayer CEO, Schulman enters at least fifty tournaments a year, and that number often goes up to around 100, including the World Series of Poker Events and the World Poker Tour. Despite that Schulman calls himself a professional magazine player and a semi-professional poker player. There is little doubt that he has revolutionized the game though and we all have much to thank him for.
