Barny Boatman is one of the most famous English poker players in the world and has a colourful past that allows him to tell stories to his fellow professionals until his heart’s content! Barny Boatman is a true nomad, and travelled from place to place during his younger years. Visiting Spain, Australia, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, he funded his travels with bar work after leaving school with no qualifications or future, if you took any notice of his teachers. However, having gone through several careers, including teaching, journalism and building, he has now settled for being a professional poker player and commentator.
Boatman has had a heartbreaking life away from the table. He lost his sister to cancer some time ago and nearly lost his own life in a motorbike accident. It was the chilling thought of life being too short that has resulted in his transition to poker player. He used to play with friends and, when they could all play, they would enter tournaments in London’s Edgware Road. This was how the Hendon Mob was formed.
The Hendon Mob is a staple of UK poker and was formed by Boatman, his brother Ross, Ram Vaswani and Joe Beevers formed the group after the latter two set up games that the former two attended. They have been together ever since and regularly appeared on Late Night Poker, which was televised in the UK.
Although he had been playing for years, Boatman only achieved his first cash in the 2000 World Series of Poker. His result in the $3,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em event led him to the Main Event four days later. He finished 16th, despite being chip leader for quite some time. He has never won a WSOP bracelet but achieved a measure of success on the table. He is now forging a career in poker commentary and makes an excellent colour commentator. The game will be the centre of his life for the foreseeable future.
