Mis-click Leads To Monster Pot

During an intense heads-up contest between FullTilt Member Phil Ivey and online profressional Brian “sbrugby” Townsend, a simple mis-click sparked a monster all-in pot. Phil Ivey had managed to build his stack up to $135k+ during the $200/$400 NL Hold’em matchup when the following hand came up.

Sitting on a stack over $80k, sbrugby — known to multi-table which can ’cause accidental bets and folds in online poker — happened to raise this particular hand up to $30,800 total. Ivey, obviously realizing the huge over-bet to be inadvertant, decided to push his entire stack into the middle. After typing in several censored expletives into the chat box, sbrugby decided to gamble and made the $50k+ call. And what did the cards show?

Kd9c for Ivey and Ah8c for sbrugby. Not exactly the AA versus KK situation that would warrant a $160k pre-flop pot. But nonetheless, these two high stakes professionals found themselves racing for a pot worth nearly $164k with sbrugby holding a slight 59% to 41% lead. That would soon change as the 8d7s8s flop came huge for sbrugby giving him trip Eights and a 95% chance of winning the hand. Ivey would need running Nines, Kings, or straight cards to take down the hand, but the Qh on the turn sealed it for sbrugby as he raked in the enormous pot.

After analyzing the hand further, both players seemed to have played the hand correctly. Realizing sbrugby’s overbet was unintentional, Ivey’s Kd9c was probably a good enough hand to push in with to try to take down the pot right there. His opponent could have easily been holding any of various hands that would be raised heads-up. Unfortunately, sbrugby did hold an A-hi and was bold enough to make the huge call and also lucky enough to have his hand hold up.

Wow!!! This guy is an “online pro”? That is one of the worst calls I have ever seen in my life. He is getting around 2 to 1, but geez A8o. Any pair 88+ has your ass in a sling, A9+ has you dominated too. Ivey’s all in doesn’t have to mean weakness because picking up 30K without a fight with a hand like AQs or TT is a very profitable play. I know you might be steaming from putting in such a big misclick raise, but don’t you have to protect the 50K in front of you? Even though he has the best hand, he still is a mere 58-41% favorite. That is certainly an important edge to have very late in a fast structure tournament, but in a cash game? I just think this is a horrible play. If the action is this insane at the high limits I might have to sell my kidneys for a buyin.
